How to Help a Friend Who is in an Unhealthy Relationship

Take Action

The last part of the plan is to take action. There are a few things you should tell your friend.

I am here for you when you want help.

  • Your friend may not be looking for a solution, but may just want to share emotions. Be sure to offer your support.

You did not cause this.

  • Victims often blame themselves for the abuse. Be sure to tell your friend that he or she is not the cause of the unhealthy relationship.

I am concerned for your safety.

  • If you think that your friend is in physical danger, it is important to get them help quickly. Offering concern can help ease their fears.

You cannot change your partner or the way they choose to act.

  • Abused partners often feel that they can help or “fix” their abusive partner, but this is rarely successful. Only by engaging outside support can you help the situation.

Lastly, you will want to get a trusted adult involved. This can be a parent, teacher, guidance counselor, or other adult you trust. Dealing with an unhealthy relationship can be a daunting task, and you do not have to do it alone. There are many resources and supports out there to help you and your friend. Do not be afraid to speak up and get help.
