Safety Playbook for Individual Development
and Engagement of Responsible Students
Introduction and Objective > Ask Questions > Respond Appropriately > Asking Questions > Take Action > Summary
When you suspect that a friend of yours is in an unhealthy relationship, you should put a plan in place and follow it. First, ask questions to get details without being judgmental. Second, respond appropriately by listening and believing your friend while lending support and not casting blame. Finally, take action by telling your friend it isn’t their fault and getting help from a trusted adult. Remember that the unhealthy relationship might be with an adult, such as a parent, coach, or teacher. These steps will help your friend more than you know.
Confronting a friend about an abusive relationship can be challenging. They may not want to talk about it or they may deny that the relationship is unhealthy. They also may feel scared that the offender will get into trouble. Unfortunately, ignoring the problem will only make it worse. If you feel that your friend is in danger, you should tell a parent, teacher, counselor, or other trusted adult to get your friend help immediately. They are the ones who will get your friend the help that they need. Although your friend may be angry with you at first, they will thank you in the end. Your friend’s safety is the highest priority.
If you or anyone you know has experience with these or other difficult situations, it’s important to know that you’re not alone. Talking to a parent, teacher, counselor, family member, or other trusted adult can help you to resolve the situation before things become too difficult to control.
