How to Help a Friend Who is in an Unhealthy Relationship

Asking Questions

While gathering information, you want to respond appropriately. How you respond to their answers can help or hinder your ability to help your friend.

Listen - Nothing is more frustrating than being asked a question and then not being listened to. Be sure to listen to what your friend says and remember what he or she says.

Believe - Your friend may have gone to others who didn’t believe them or thought they were to blame. Be sure to believe your friend and make them feel safe.

Blame - Victims are NEVER to blame for being in an unhealthy relationship. Be sure never to blame your friend for starting or staying in an unhealthy relationship.

Support - A friend in an unhealthy relationship may not realize they are in it, and may not want to end the relationship. They may be fearful that someone will get into trouble. Being pushy or controlling can cause your friend to become fearful or defensive. Be sure to offer support without telling your friend what to do or how to feel.
