Healthy Boundaries and Refusal Skills: Part 2

The Benefits of Refusal

In order to keep yourself safe and out of trouble, it is important to learn the value of refusal skills. In the future, you will be more likely to make positive choices and refrain from engaging in high-risk behaviors if you are armed with refusal or negotiation strategies. When people learn to stop and consider the consequences before responding to a request, as well as a variety of ways to say "no," they become more accomplished at refusing to participate in anything that could harm themselves or others. Here are some additional benefits of honing your refusal skills.

Self-respect: By saying "no," you are showing that you respect yourself and you are protecting your reputation.

Emotional relief: Your morals and beliefs keep you emotionally grounded. If you successfully utilize refusal skills, you will feel balanced and relieved.

Safety: You will feel much safer in any situation if you have a plan for saying “no.”

Strength and power: One of the best ways to feel powerful is by upholding your beliefs and not letting someone break down your barriers before you are ready.

When anyone challenges your beliefs or values, always remember to be strong.
