Safety Playbook for Individual Development
and Engagement of Responsible Students
Introduction and Objective > Saying "No" > The NICE Technique of Refusing > Demonstrating Refusal Skills > The Benefits of Refusal > Summary
Everyone should know their own boundaries and limits. If you understand your own boundaries, you can tell others when they are doing something that makes you uncomfortable and protect the things that are important to you. When someone violates our boundaries, it doesn’t feel good. But that doesn’t give us the right to use physical, verbal, or emotional violence against them. If someone violates your boundaries, you should communicate to them in a clear, calm way what your boundaries are and how it makes you feel when someone crosses them. If the person still chooses to disrespect your boundaries, you should talk to a trusted adult.
If you or anyone you know has experience with these or other difficult situations, it’s important to know that you’re not alone. Talking to a parent, teacher, counselor, family member, or other trusted adult can help you to resolve the situation before things become too difficult to control.
