Safety Playbook for Individual Development
and Engagement of Responsible Students
Introduction and Objective > Consent Versus Coercion > Communicating in Relationships > Communicating Feelings > Communicating About Abuse > Summary
Effective communication is one of the most important aspects of all relationships. How we communicate can change and can also affect these relationships. When communicating with a friend about feeling left out, we may pretend to be fine but then ignore him or her for the rest of the day. However, assertive communication is always best when reporting a serious situation. When we begin to feel coerced or uncomfortable, it is very important to have a strong support system and a plan of action. How would you communicate about an abusive situation? Where would you start? To whom would you turn? Think about and answer these questions so you are prepared to communicate assertively in times of need.
If you or anyone you know has experience with these or other difficult situations, it’s important to know that you’re not alone. Talking to a parent, teacher, counselor, family member, or other trusted adult can help you to resolve the situation before things become too difficult to control.
