Communication

Asking for Assistance with Communication

If the idea of communicating is still difficult for you, it’s okay to ask for help. Speaking with an adult (a family member, teacher, or guidance counselor) will make you feel better. You can ask them to be present for the conversation as a mediator. A mediator is someone who helps people communicate clearly to avoid or solve a conflict.

When you use a mediator to help you to communicate, they will give you suggestions about how to effectively explain your thoughts and feelings. Some of those suggestions might include:

  1. Actively listening - so that you know exactly how the other person feels
  2. Making eye contact - to promote healthy non-verbal communication and encourage active listening
  3. Expressing your views - don’t be afraid to express your thoughts in a respectful way
  4. Using “I” statements - instead of saying “You did this…,” you can say, “I feel this way when you do this…”
