Introduction and Objective > Healthy Ways of Communicating > Having Difficulty Communicating
Sometimes it’s hard to communicate in a healthy way, especially if we know that a conversation will be difficult, or awkward. Even though it can be difficult to have those conversations, there are ways to make these moments easier.
One thing that you can do before a difficult conversation is to prepare. Think about what you want to say, and why you want to say it. Just as you would prepare for a class presentation, taking notes to remember what you want to say will help you to stay focused when you have that conversation.
Another strategy that you can use when you are having difficulty with communicating is to practice the conversation with another person. If you are worried about a conversation that you have to have with a friend, try asking a family member or another friend to have the conversation with you first.
If the topic is really sensitive or private, you can try writing your feelings down in a letter. This gives you a chance to explain your thoughts and feelings. Once you write your letter, you can decide whether you want to let the other person read the letter, or if you want to read it to them.
It’s okay to be nervous about communicating, but you shouldn’t let those nerves stop you from expressing your thoughts and feelings.
