Introduction and Objective > Social Norms > Negative Social Norms > Identifying Social Norms > Harmful Dating Situations > Summary
In conclusion, social norms are behaviors that are expected of us in our society. Although many are harmless, some social norms promote negative stereotypes, or generalizations made about a group of people. These negative stereotypes can support abusive, unhealthy relationships. If you find yourself in an unhealthy relationship, the most important thing to do is get help from someone. Facing an abusive partner alone can be intimidating and unsuccessful. Many people care about you and want you to be safe. These people will help you if you need it.
If you or anyone you know has experience with these or other difficult situations, it’s important to know that you’re not alone. Talking to a parent, teacher, counselor, family member, or other trusted adult can help you to resolve the situation before things become too difficult to control.
