Harmful Dating Situations

As we stated, social norms and stereotypes can promote abusive, harmful, and unhealthy relationships. If you or a friend is in a harmful dating situation, then you will want to get out as soon as possible. Below are some tips to help you.

Know the warning signs.

Knowing that you are in a harmful relationship is an important start. Some warning signs are extreme criticism or humiliation, bruises or scars, extreme jealousy, pressuring or forcing someone to have sex, threats of violence, and mood swings.

Get help from someone.

You do not have to face these problems alone. There are many people -- friends, family, teachers -- who want to help you out. Seek the assistance of anyone you need. This is the most important thing to do!

Limit communication.

It is important to limit communication with a harmful dating partner while you are making a plan and getting help. This can be done by turning off your phone, or using your social media privacy settings to prevent others from knowing where you are.

Stay calm.

It is natural to feel frightened, alone, defensive, or sad when leaving a harmful dating relationship. Getting help from friends and family or a counselor can help you work through these feelings and stay calm so you can focus on removing yourself from the harmful dating situation.
