Social Norms

Let’s start by first explaining what a social norm is. A social norm is a behavior that is expected from individuals in a particular group or society. These behaviors can change from society to society.

For example, it is customary for people to shake hands when they meet. This tradition actually comes from ancient Greek times as a sign proving that people were not hiding weapons up their sleeves. Today, handshakes are often exchanged when first being introduced to someone, as well as a professional way to say hello or goodbye. Other societies have different behaviors. Some hug, kiss a cheek, bow, or even kiss the hand. These behaviors are expected from everyone in that society. Imagine how you would feel if someone you just met gave you a long hug and kissed your forehead? You might feel uncomfortable since this is not a behavior that is normal for our society. It is not a social norm.

Besides just handshakes, social norms influence how we think and perceive the world. In the United States, we value things like freedom, being able to speak your mind, and being proud of your own achievements. However, we value these things only because the society we are in tells us to. People who grew up in other societies may not feel that those values are as important.

If you are interested in this topic, there are many fascinating studies that have been done that you can read. For the purposes of this lesson, though, it is important to know what a social norm is and that it can influence how you think and perceive the world.

Studies show that peers play a large role in the development and influence of the social and emotional well-being of others.

It is important for students to understand the characteristics of healthy relationships and the effect their actions can have on others.
