The True "You"

Positive Character Qualities

Building one’s character takes effort and careful thought -- it doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time and is built by thoughts, decisions, and actions.

A person’s character is formed by many different factors. Below are six examples of positive qualities that you can use to develop your character.

  • Accountability - Take responsibility for your actions.

Your actions are just as important as your words. If you make a mistake, acknowledge it and learn from it. Doing the things you are supposed to do and doing your best are great ways to show that you are a responsible person.

  • Compassion - Help others. Show others that you care.

Be thankful for the things that you have. If someone apologizes for doing something wrong, give them your forgiveness. Be kind to others and be willing to lend a helping hand.

  • Fairness - Play by the rules. Take turns. Share!

An easy way to think about fairness is to treat all people equally. You do not want to place blame on others. Remember, all people have feelings. Take the time to listen to others, as well.

  • Generosity - Help others who are in need. Give your time to better your community.

Part of being a good citizen is following rules and laws. These are in place to maintain order and keep everyone safe. Good citizens also respect authority and get involved to make their community a better place.

  • Respect - Treat others the way you would want to be treated. Do the right thing.

If you really want to show respect for someone, listen to what they have to say. You do not have to agree with everything that is said, but you should value the opinions of others.

  • Trust - Be honest with yourself and others. Don’t steal or lie. Do things that you say you are going to do. Be tolerant of others.

A person’s trust in you can easily be broken. Once it is broken, it can be difficult to regain. Build a good reputation by doing what you know is right. If you commit to something, be sure to follow through.

Children's identities are formed, in part, through their social interactions and those identities are carried with them into adulthood.

Addressing individualism at an early age can help to build a foundation for positive relationships with others.
