The True "You"

Character

What is character? Simply put, character consists of the qualities that make a person who they are. Character is unique to everyone individually. A person’s character can also be who a person is and how a person acts when no one is looking.

Sometimes people change who they are depending on their situation or surroundings. When this happens, that person’s character is being compromised. A person’s character can change in a variety of ways, including the way that they speak, the way that they act, and the way that they dress. It takes a lot of courage for a person to stand up for what he or she feels, prefers, and believes.

Now, read the scenario below.

Jimmy and Bobby are best friends. They decide they want to sit at a table at lunch with another group of boys. The group agrees that Jimmy can sit at the table, but they tell Bobby he can sit there only if he buys each of the boys something extra from the cafeteria every day. Jimmy goes along with the boys and tells Bobby he wants ice cream.

In this example, Jimmy showed weak character. He changed the way he behaved because of the people he was around.

One way a person can build a positive character is to model their behaviors after people they admire.

Children's identities are formed, in part, through their social interactions and those identities are carried with them into adulthood.

Addressing individualism at an early age can help to build a foundation for positive relationships with others.
