Introduction and Objective > Media in Society > Self-Esteem
Self-esteem is the confidence you have in yourself. It is important to have positive self-esteem. This includes having a positive self-image, or the view you have of your abilities, appearance, and personality. A positive attitude, as well as making healthy choices, is a major part of building your self-esteem.
Has an advertisement ever changed the way you feel about yourself? Has a commercial or television show ever affected how you want to dress, talk, or act? It is easy to get caught up in the moment when viewing a show, but it is important to remember that the characters you see are actors. Their real lives are not like they are on the screen. The personalities, appearances, and attitudes are not realistic, and it would be impossible for you to replicate them. Trying to model yourself after a character you saw on television can be a bad choice, especially if you are trying to change who you are to fit in.

Recent studies show that students spend anywhere from 2 - 9 hours using different forms of media outside of school.
Due to this prevalent interaction, students need to understand how media can affect their perceptions, thoughts, and preferences.
