Media

Self-Esteem

Read the following scenario and answer the question below.

Melinda’s favorite TV show is about a group of teenage friends and their lives inside and outside of school. All of the main characters are the popular kids in the school. They all have an “ideal” body, but Melinda thinks they all seem to be underweight. When overweight students appear on the show, they are often portrayed as being dumb or lazy and are the butt of many jokes. Melinda starts to become critical of her own body. When she hears someone laughing at school, she immediately becomes self-conscious and thinks others are laughing at her.

How has the media influenced Melinda’s self-esteem?

Recent studies show that students spend anywhere from 2 - 9 hours using different forms of media outside of school.

Due to this prevalent interaction, students need to understand how media can affect their perceptions, thoughts, and preferences.
