Safety Playbook for Individual Development
and Engagement of Responsible Students
Introduction and Objective > Benefits of a Healthy Relationship > Appropriate Dating Behavior > Healthy Relationships > Relationships in High School and Beyond
As we grow and mature, our expectations of relationships change. What you want as a teenager is different from what you want as an adult. This is natural and should happen. As people themselves grow, the type of person they are attracted to also can change. In college, students are focused on academics, while the pressures to drink, use drugs, and have sex have only increased since high school. After college, many adults are starting careers, and relationships take a backseat. Others want to get married and start families. Most high-school students probably don’t think about getting married and starting families, though these might be concerns that some high-school students think about.
It is important to know that if you choose to have a romantic relationship, then you should constantly be evaluating what your boundaries and expectations are in the relationship and clearly discussing these with your partner. When your expectations change, have these conversations again. Whether these conversations happen once a year or once a week, you should always feel open to discussing your feelings. If you feel that your partner isn’t on the same page as you after many conversations, then perhaps it is time to find
someone new.
