Healthy Relationships: Part 1

Summary

A healthy relationship is one where both parties feel respected, safe, and valued within the relationship. They come in a variety of forms, based upon each person’s individual wants, needs, and boundaries. The key to every healthy relationship is strong communication.

Think about the relationships you have in your life.

  • Are there certain relationships that make you feel confident, respected, and safe?
  • Do you have any relationships that you think may be unhealthy?
  • Do you feel comfortable expressing your needs and boundaries to the other person in the relationship?
  • How will you work to communicate your boundaries, both verbally and non-verbally?

Remember, our idea of a healthy relationship is developed from the relationships that we see in our lives. As you observe relationships in life and in the media, use the questions above to evaluate them.

If you or anyone you know has experience with these or other difficult situations, it’s important to know that you’re not alone. Talking to a parent, teacher, counselor, family member, or other trusted adult can help you to resolve the situation before things become too difficult to control.
